Heritage & Origins

Before it was a dog chew, it was a way of life.

A centuries-old tradition preserved honestly in the high alpine valleys of Nepal.

High in the Himalayas of Nepal, far above the tree line where winters are long and nothing is wasted, mountain herders have made chhurpi for generations. Fresh yak milk is curdled, pressed, and smoke-cured over native wood fires until it hardens into something closer to stone than cheese. It fed families through brutal mountain passes. It traveled in the pockets of traders crossing 15,000-foot heights. And the herders' dogs, the fierce mastiffs guarding the alpine flocks, chewed the rock-hard ends for hours by the fireside.

The Sourcing Disconnect

Original Chews began with a simple observation: the world's best natural dog chew already existed. It just hadn't been brought over honestly. Most "Himalayan-style" chews on American specialty retail shelves are made in industrial, commercial dairy plants far from any mountain peak. They utilize chemical binders, artificial drying shortcuts that soften the block, and cheap fillers that dilute the authentic heritage.

We went the other way. We decided that keeping the connection straight from the Himalayan herder to your doorstep was the only way to build a premium, honest brand.
